The key speaker was John Moran, Head of Bank Restructuring with the Department of Finance. An honoured guest was His Excellency Julian King, the British Ambassador. Howard Lewis, MD Experian Ireland, personally congratulated the Ambassador and his team on the outstanding success of the recent visit to Ireland by Queen Elizabeth.

“The why of credit”

John Moran opened the event with a presentation on “The why of credit” and said the Government needed to “push ahead” with developing the strategy to put in place a more effective credit information system in Ireland.

He said: “The establishment of a fully effective credit registry system will be key to improving the information available to banks to make sound assessments and to improve banking supervision. I am also anxious to see a comprehensive source of information on new lending and the demand for credit in the economy.” Pointing to the fact that “banks are prepared to lend”, Mr Moran said that in the 12 months to April 2011, AIB and Bank of Ireland loaned €8 billion in new and restructured lending – in excess of the joint target of €6 billion. Mr Moran also outlined a number of initiatives which are underway to influence the supply of credit in the Irish Economy as well as increase confidence to borrow on the part of the private sector.
