Document ID Check
Document ID Check provides a fast and effective solution to the problems of manually authenticating identity documents. Verifying identities can be a complex and challenging task, yet in many industries consumers are increasingly demanding an instant response to applications and transactions. Experian’s Document ID Check undertakes a fully automated check within seconds, providing a clear indication of the validity of identity credentials.
Organisations need to protect themselves against the threat of identity fraud to reduce the level of risk, losses and costs associated with fraud, as well as complying with national and international regulations.
To do this, many companies invest heavily in resources to ensure that customer-facing employees are trained to detect fraudulent identity documents. This requires significant expenditure on a regular basis to deliver training and support.
Yet, investment in training does not guarantee that the verification standards will be consistently applied across a business. Manual checking of identity documents will always have a subjective element and a risk of human error, as well as being a time-consuming process.
Storing identity documents
The risks involved with manual checking and regulatory demands mean that many organisations are obliged to retain copies of identity documents. This process can be expensive and carries a high risk in terms of effectively retrieving data.
Which data is recorded? How is data stored and secured? Who performed the original validation of document? These are all key questions that need to be considered to meet regulatory compliance.
It can be difficult in many circumstances to establish in retrospect that a document has been sufficiently examined in the first instance. Also the copied version may not show indications of fraud that could have been detected on the original document.
Experian's answer to the challenge
Document ID Check rapidly scans documents for inconsistencies with a robust checking process that includes verifying a number of features. Within seconds, the system provides an assessment of the validity of the credentials.
In addition, the system stores copies of documents electronically with an audit trail, removing the need for hard copies to be taken. Document ID Check is specifically designed for accurate and efficient identity authentication in high-volume customer touchpoints such as banks and other financial services organisations as well as retail outlets, car dealerships, law-enforcement agencies, and public venues.
Benefits of Document ID Check
The speed of the system provides an immediate response, highlighting inconsistencies including those that may be missed in a manual check.
The level of checking is more robust than manual processes as the technology utilises ultraviolet, infrared and electronic chip reading as well a number of other checks.
The automated, single system ensures a consistent approach to document checking across an entire organisation, removing the risk of human error.
Management and customer-facing employees can have more confidence in the accuracy and security of the verification process.
- Increased productivity
Automated document checking is quicker than manual checking, allowing higher productivity in a face to face environment.
- Secure data storage
As data is captured, and retained in the system the cost for holding hard copies of documents is eliminated. The automated system simplifies data retrieval and assists with regulatory compliance.
- Ensure safeguarding
The audit trail gives clear visibility of which checks have been made and by whom. This information can also be demonstrated to regulators.
- Comprehensive coverage
The system has over two million document templates, representing different versions of documents that are already in use around the world. Currently, Document ID Check supports in excess of 300 types of documents covering over 130 countries.
How does it work?
The fully automated system allows documents such as driving licences and residents cards to be automatically checked against the relevant security features. The system checks for inconsistencies and authenticates using a range of sophisticated features to carry out an electronic ‘visual’ check and a machine readable data check, as well as using ultraviolet and infrared light, and electronic chip reading.
The document check examines the data on the surface of the document, undertakes an algorithm check and assesses the data. There are then three views of the document that can be selected; the visual, ultraviolet and infrared views. Photo images contained within electronic chips can also be displayed on screen for comparison along with other data.
The system undertakes a document check within three to five seconds and provides an assessment of the validity of the credentials. When the assessment is ‘red’, the user can review the details to determine the cause. Alternatively a supervisor or specialist investigator can review the output both locally or remotely from a centralised location.
Data is stored in the Document ID Check system, which means that organisations no longer need to hold hard copies of documents.
The electronic information stored in the system is easily retrievable, providing a full audit trail, including details of checks that have been conducted, along with time stamp data.
Document ID Check is a networked solution with a range of deployment options offering a choice for where document images and associated data are stored.
Ease of implementation
The technology seamlessly integrates with enterprise systems and works with existing hardware platforms, reducing implementation time and costs. Document ID Check consists of a scanner and software that can be installed on a dedicated work station or as an integral part of an application processing system.
Document ID Check also interfaces to other Experian solutions thereby maximising the efficiency and effectiveness of the check.
Links to other data sources
Organisations can utilise their own ‘watch lists’ via Document ID Check and can also take advantage of Experian’s compromised document database, which contains details supplied by a range of agencies.
Proven, established technology
The core software is used in over 90 countries and has more than 75,000 installations worldwide, handling a huge volume of data in a variety of environments. Already established in the aviation industry, the core software processes millions of transactions each year.
